Main ContentPlastic Surgery Residency
Welcome to Department of Surgery's plastic and reconstructive residency program. As program director of both the integrated and independent track residency programs, I thank you for your interest in our training programs. It is an exciting time of growth and expansion in our division, and I am proud to be part of this.
Our division was founded in 1955 by James ‘Jimmy’ Hendrix, and we have a long history with graduates spanning more than five decades. Many of these graduates have gone on to devote their entire careers to providing care to a large underserved population here in Mississippi. Both of our training tracts (independent and integrated) are fully ACGME accredited. We currently have six integrated plastic surgery positions for a six-year tract and three independent residents for a three-year tract. Our residents come from all over the country and have successfully matched through ERAS or the SF Match. Click here for detailed information regarding the application process.
UMMC serves as our program’s centerpiece facility, and it is here where our trainees gain almost an unparalleled experience in both the routine and most complex plastic surgical procedures. Our trainees garner a vast breadth of exposure to hand and craniofacial trauma, extremity salvage and complex ablative reconstructions from the oncology services. This provides ample opportunity to perform microsurgical reconstructions such as DIEP flaps for breast, fibula osseocutaneous flaps for head and neck, and routine and both freestyle perforator flaps for extremity salvage. We are currently the only center in the entire state of Mississippi offering DIEP flap breast reconstructions.
At Children's of Mississippi, our trainees gain experience in cleft lip and palate, orthognathics, craniofacial distraction, vascular anomalies, and cranial vault procedures. We also have faculty dedicated to pediatric hand conditions such as syndactyly’s and duplications. Residents also have rotations at the G.V. "Sonny" Montgomery VA hospital which provides a large breadth of experience in local flaps, skin cancers, and routine hand conditions.
In order to gain exposure to a private practice and outpatient plastic surgery experiences we have developed a close working relationship with several plastic surgeons in the community. Through this rotation, aptly named the ‘town’ rotation, a large number of aesthetic cases are done both in local hospitals and office-based accredited surgery centers. Residents routinely participate in aesthetic breast cases, facial procedures such as facelift and blepharoplasty, and body contouring procedures such as abdominoplasty and liposuction.
From an educational perspective, our clinical experience is complemented by a multitude of didactic lectures, preop conferences, journal clubs and morbidity and mortality conference. All of our residents attend multiple meetings throughout their training, including the Penn Flap Course, ASMS course, ASPS annual meeting, and Plastic Surgery Boot Camp. Many of our residents go on to present at national and regional meetings each year, including the ASRM, ASPS, ACAPS, AAPS, and SESPRS. We also have two cadaver lab training sessions annually, sawbones skill labs semiannually, and a fully functional microsurgical training and simulation lab. The faculty hold biannual "mock oral" exams for senior residents and allow all graduating residents to attend an ABPS board review course prior to graduation.
On behalf of all faculty, we are proud of our current residents, recent graduates and our programs, and we look forward to meeting each of you.
